THE AMAZING GRAYS Thank
you for ‘turning’ to THE AMAZING GRAYS PAGE … but why did you ??? Is it
possible that you are ‘maturing’ also ? ( … that’s a polite term for
‘getting older’.) That’s what we’re about, us ‘Amazing Grayers’.
Yes, me too.
We who are ‘seniors’ … (just look
at us … no! … we definitely aren’t high school Seniors) … yes! We are
people in the later stages of our lives. Some of us are still quite
mobile … others are not quite mobile. Some of us have memory problems …
others can’t remember their problems, or very much else either. Some of us
are nostalgic and don’t like change. Others find they don’t have much
change, or paper money either. We’re all different; yet we share many of
the same challenges. Some of us have time on our hands, and others wish we
had more hands to get done what we want to do in the time that we have.
‘The Amazing Grays’ (a recently acquired name for our group) is a loosely
organized fellowship that seek to stimulate the mind, body, spirit, and social
aspects of our beings at a time when all of those seem to be waning (not to
be confused with ‘whining’). At present, we have three on-going
activities that help us provide some of those 'stimulations’.
I’m in my 56th year of Pastoral
Ministry, so I also qualify for our ‘Seniors Group’, the name of which is
‘Amazing Grays’ ! Actually our boundaries are set at 50 years old and up.
up, up … Once you get so up that you are in heaven, well, you don’t need
us anymore. In reality we don’t ask your age. If you feel ‘mature’,
come on along … we’ll welcome you.
… A Word (several) about who I am and what
our ‘amazing gray’ group is about. I was born 79 years ago and got married
sometime back then …(not the same year.) My wife, Barbara, and I have six
children and 10 grandchildren. We grew up in the Chicago suburbs, went to
the same high school, got married after college, started a ‘Wesleyan
Methodist’ church in our home town, and six years later moved to the ‘new
‘community of Elk Grove Village where we started another new Wesleyan
Church. We literally ‘built’ the ‘church’ and its building and stayed as
Pastor for 24 years. We both taught school for several years to financially
help get the church on its feet. We were active in many ways in the
community, and most of our children grew up there. In the early 80’s we
moved to Wisconsin Rapids to pastor the Wesleyan Church … for 11 years. I
left for some other assignments for a few years, and in semi-retirement, I
was invited to become part-time Pastor to the Seniors back in this same
Wesleyan Church here in Wisconsin Rapids. It all adds up both to 56 years
of marriage and of ministry !
WEDNESDAY MORNING BIBLE STUDY
(10 a.m.-11 a.m.) I'm the
teacher....discussion is encouraged from everyone else.. It is intended to
feed the mind and nourish the spirit. YOU ARE WELCOME ! It’s
held in the foyer of our church building, 640 Baker Street, Wisconsin
Rapids. (No Steps !) Right now, we are 21 strong (when we aren't at
Dr.'s appointments or taking care of grand children) and working through a
Survey of the entire New Testament. We come from several different churches.
YOU ARE WELCOME
(10 a.m.) taught by myself with discussion
by everyone else … intended to feed the mind and nourish the spirit. YOU
ARE WELCOME ! It’s held in the foyer of our church building, 640 Baker
Street, Wisconsin Rapids. (No Steps !) Right now, we are ‘doing’ a Survey
of the whole New Testament !
Thought
from God’s Word to encourage us on our ‘journey’; and a short
presentation by someone who can inform us about ISSUES important to Seniors.
YOU ARE WELCOME TO JOIN US ! (There is no fee or charge for involvement.)
Our Fun Gathering is always on the 3rd Thursday of the month from
1 pm to 3 pm.
THE THIRD THURSDAYS
The
Second Activity is a monthly FUN GATHERING held at Chula Vista
Apts. Community Room (1200 Huntington, W.R.) including: Games,
which challenge the mind and move the body; Humor, which includes
lots of jokes and usually a funny ‘skit’; Singing, old and nostalgic
and seasonal songs; Great Refreshments, which stimulate the palate
and comfort the stomach; a brief. Thought
from God’s Word to encourage us on a journey; and a short
presentation by someone who can inform us about issues important to
seniors. YOU ARE WELCOME TO JOIN US! (There is no fee or charge for
involvement.) Our fun gathering is always on the 3rd Thursday of the month
from 1 pm to 3 pm.
MIDYEAR BUS DAY-TRIPS
The Third Activity is a "summer only" project and consists of
day-long Bus Tours to various locations within a day’s range for a round
trip. Once a month (in place of our Fun Gathering (June, July, & August.)
we charter a "coach bus" and make these trips available, first come, first serve, to fill the Bus.
Charge is kept at a minimum based on actual cost for the bus charter and the
featured location (if they have a charge). Total usually runs about $35
per person each trip and most
sites are accessible for those with walking limitations. (We encourage
bringing grand children who can ride for half price) and: YOU ARE WELCOME!!
We have
a general concern for all of those who participate in any of these activities whether
they are otherwise involved in our church or not. Quite a number of our
group have a different church home, but have found a good social outlet with
our senior programming. If you would like more information about any of
